Hidden Peaks of North Wales: Five Must-Visit Mountains Beyond Snowdon

North Wales is well known for its mountains, especially Snowdon, Wales’ tallest mountain, which usually steals the spotlight. However, there are plenty of other mountains that are equally as impressive but not as busy. North Wales is the perfect place for beginner hikers, professional mountaineers, and everyone in between. With a vast range of mountains, there is a route for every level. Whether you’re seeking solitude, adventure, or breathtaking views, these peaks have something to offer. Below, we have picked five of our absolute favourites:

Cadair Idris

Located in the south of Snowdonia, Cadair Idris is a firm favourite for its dramatic landscapes and rich mythology. The nearest town is Dolgellau, from where various routes begin. The mountain’s name translates to “Idris’s Chair,” referring to the mythical giant who is believed to have once used the peak as his throne.

Trails and Difficulty
  • Minffordd Path: A challenging route that takes you through vast woodlands and past the stunning Llyn Cau.
  • Pony Path: One of the easier trails, ideal for less experienced hikers or those just wanting to have a relaxing hike, offering gradual ascents and stunning panoramic views.
  • Fox’s Path: Known for its steep climb, this trail is best suited for those looking for a bit more adventure.

Moel Siabod

Moel Siabod (Bare Hill in English) provides a spectacular hiking experience. From the summit of Moel Siabod, you can enjoy one of the best panoramic views in Snowdonia, overlooking Snowdon, the Glyderau, and the Carneddau ranges. Its relatively quieter paths make it perfect for those looking for a peaceful path.

Trails and Difficulty
  • Daear Ddu Ridge: A rewarding scramble for intermediate hikers, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding ranges.
  • Easier Routes: For beginners, the paths starting from Plas y Brenin provide gentler slopes and still offer stunning scenery.

Y Garn

Y Garn is part of the Glyderau range with trails starting from the car park near Llyn Ogwen. This mountain offers a variety of landscapes from the cliffs of the Devil’s Kitchen, to the tranquil shores of Llyn Idwal. The summit provides stunning views over the Glyderau range and down to the valleys below.

Trails and Difficulty
  • Devil’s Kitchen Route: A popular and challenging trail that takes you past the striking rock formations of the Devil’s Kitchen and up to the summit.
  • Alternative Routes: There are gentler paths available for those looking for an easier climb.

Pen Llithrig y Wrach

Located on the east of Snodownia, Pen Llithrig y Wrach is a lesser-known mountain that offers a quiet alternative to the busier mountains. The name translates to “Slippery Peak of the Witch”, and although the origin of the name isn’t certain, many people believe it could be from the peak’s resemblance of a witch’s hat. The paths here are less explored, offering a serene experience amidst stunning natural beauty.

Trails and Difficulty
  • Llyn Cowlyd Reservoir Route: A scenic path that takes you along the shores of the reservoir before ascending the peak. Ideal for intermediate hikers looking for a quiet adventure.

Carnedd Llewelyn

Carnedd Llewelyn is the second-highest peak in Wales. Situated in the northern part of Snowdonia. The mountain is accessible from the Ogwen Valley and is a quieter hiking experience to nearby mountains. The views from the top are incredible, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Trails and Difficulty
  • Cwm Eigiau Route: A moderate trail that takes you through a beautiful valley before the ascent. Perfect for intermediate hikers.
  • Llyn Ogwen Route: A slightly longer and more challenging path, offering breathtaking views along the way.
