History of Maenan Abbey

The history of Maenan Abbey started in 1277. In that year, Edward I defeated Llewellyn ap Gruffydd in the hope of strengthening his hold on North Wales. He built a chain of castles along the coast commencing at Conwy in 1283. The present structure was built of local granite between 1851 and 1854.

In 1972, the Thornley family purchased Maenan Abbey Caravan Park, located in the heart of the Conwy Valley, North Wales. The second Wales-based caravan park on the roster, Maenan Abbey’s secluded setting, continues to amaze visitors.

What is there to do near Maenan Abbey?

There is plenty to see and do. This park is perfectly located in the Conwy Valley and just a stone’s throw away from the charming village of Betws-y-Coed. This area of Conwy is in an excellent location for all your walking needs, whether that be scrambling around river-filled canyons or long leafy walks through the vast amount of woodlands in the surrounding area.

For some breath-taking country & Lake views, you’re spoilt for choice. Our favourites would have to be Llyn Geirionydd and Llyn Crafnant. However, if you prefer browsing in local shops or enjoying a hot or cold beverage or two, there are plenty of cafes and traditional pubs waiting to be explored. Our top picks are; Alpine Coffee Shop, The Royal Oak  and the hanging pizzeria

Fun for all the Family

Nearby, you’ll find Gwydyr Forest, home to various climbing & cycling routes for the explorers among you. Bodnant Garden NT is a must-visit to see the Laburnum Arch in the spring.

For you, adrenaline junkies, Zip World and Adventure Parc Snowdonia are just a short drive away. So, why not try one of North Wale’s famous attractions, ‘The Fforest Coaster‘, the UK’s only alpine coaster of its kind that allows you to zoom through the trees on a toboggan-style sledge and over a 1-kilometre track. If that’s not for you, be sure to try the Treetop Nets, Europe’s longest net walkway. Some 18 meters off the ground. It is open to ages 3+, so it is an excellent alternative option for families.
