1. How long have you been living in Yorkshire, and what makes you proud to call it home?
Having spent most of my working life in the Motor Trade, I joined the team at Thornley Leisure Parks two years ago. Except for a year traveling in Australia, I have lived in Yorkshire all of my life. The stunning landscape of the Yorkshire Dales is just one of the many reasons I am proud to call it home.
2. What defines the culture and spirit of Yorkshire?
The spirit and culture of Yorkshire are defined by its people, who are known for their stoicism and straightforward approach to life. Visitors to North Yorkshire can expect a warm welcome from genuine and hospitable locals.
3. What are some lesser-known attractions or hidden gems in Yorkshire that you recommend visiting?
There are numerous ways to spend time in the area surrounding Gallaber Park. For the energetic and adventurous, the Yorkshire Three Peaks offer a challenging experience. The Ingleton Waterfalls Walk provides a gentler four-mile hike to witness incredible natural water features shaped over millions of years.
A stroll through the charming backstreets of Giggleswick, particularly around Tems Street and Tems Beck, reveals gorgeous cottages, contemporary architecture, and stunning gardens. This area is truly a hidden gem.
4. Can you share a few of your favourite spots for a perfect day out in Yorkshire?
Having spent much of my life in the market town of Skipton, raising my family and forming strong friendships, I have a particular passion for the nearby villages of Burnsall and Appletreewick, and the hamlet of Barden along the River Wharfe.
I highly recommend a walk along the river from Barden Bridge to Appletreewick, culminating in a visit to The Craven Arms for a refreshing pint and a meal from their extensive menu. This is one of my favourite ways to spend a sunny afternoon.
5. Are there any local pubs, restaurants, or cafes that you would recommend for an authentic Yorkshire dining experience?
A traditional Sunday roast is a must when in Yorkshire, with vegetarian options available. Our rural location offers an abundance of local produce, ensuring fresh ingredients on your plate. For an exemplary Sunday roast, visit the Marton Arms in Thornton in Lonsdale, known for its wonderful food and excellent service.
For something different, try Peaks and Troughs on Ingleton High Street, where you can enjoy Sarah’s famous Buddha Bowls (meat, fish, or vegetarian) or build your own burger. The bar also offers a relaxing atmosphere for a drink.
6. What are some of the best local events or festivals in Yorkshire that visitors should not miss?
We have a 1940s weekend in both Grassington and Ingleton, as well as the Settle Flower Pot Festival. From July 13th to September 1st, stroll around the town and be amazed by the creative flower pot displays. For a breathtaking experience, visit Malham Cove and Tarn, or take a wild swim at Janet’s Foss.
Settle is home to the oldest music hall in the world, established in 1853, which has hosted remarkable acts including Paul Potts, Jason Donovan, and Elvis Presley (the latter cannot be verified).
7. What do you think makes Yorkshire an ideal location for a holiday home ?
